As one of the province’s oldest charities, HarmonI is hoping to welcome to the board a strategically-minded senior manager, director or consultant to help encourage sustainable independent living for people who live with disability or disadvantage.

Role:

Providing care and hostel accommodation, HarmonI’s trustees is keen recruit an individual with a comprehensive management skill set, including specific experience of change management and project management in a substantial company, charity or public sector body.  The nature of their work means they need some-one who has experience of reporting directly to or being on a board.

Skills and Competencies:

The individual will know about the strategic considerations that drive not-for-profit
organisations, and how these are distinguished from those in the private and public sectors.
The new trustee will be able to contribute ideas on the actions HarmonI needs to take to
position itself not just as a service provider to statutory health bodies, but as a strategic
partner. While having the right skill set is important to the role, having the right mindset is just as important. HarmonI has a 140 year track record of excellent service provision to some of the most vulnerable people in society. Those service users come first in any consideration.  Many of its existing board members have a head for business, but all of them have a social heart.

The values and behaviours that HarmonI seeks from its board members are based on the Nolan Principles. Those interested in serving as a HarmonI trustee must agree to adhere to the following principles:

1. Selflessness – board members should take decisions solely in terms of the interest of the charity’s beneficiaries.
2. Integrity – board members must avoid placing themselves under any obligation to people or organisations that might try inappropriately to influence them in their role as a board member. They should not act or take decisions in order to gain financial or other material benefits for themselves, their family, or their friends. They must declare and resolve any interests and relationships.
3. Objectivity – board members must act and take decisions impartially, fairly and on merit, using the best evidence and without discrimination or bias.
4. Accountability – board members are accountable for their decisions and actions to the public through the regulators, and must submit themselves to the scrutiny necessary to ensure this.
5. Openness – board members should act and take decisions in an open and transparent manner. Appropriate information should not be withheld from HarmonI’s stakeholders unless there are clear and lawful reasons for so doing.
6. Honesty – board members should be truthful.
7. Leadership – board members should exhibit these principles in their own behaviour. They should actively promote and robustly support the principles and be willing to challenge poor behaviour wherever it occurs.
